The Client

Kaitiaki based in Rotorua, New Zealand are wold-class leaders in adventure tourism. They offer thrilling white water rafting and river sledging experiences for all abilities. Guided tours of Mt Tarawera are also offered, promising stunning scenery and a chance to learn about local Maori culture. The company are passionate about preserving the environment and respecting Maori culture in equal measure.

The Brief

Following on from the company’s website design which I carried out in 2015, I was asked to design a character to further enhance their web presence. The character was to feature alongside the messages ‘BOOK NOW’, ‘MAKE AN INSTANT BOOKING’ or ‘CHECK’ and needed to be truly unique and memorable.

My Approach

I familiarised myself with examples of characters from competitors, purely to avoid any possible similarities moving forward. With some exciting ideas coming to fruition I began the process of Sketching by hand how I envisaged ‘Maui the rafting guide’ to look. Once I had client feedback, I was able to convert the preferred concept into a polished design in Illustrator. After experimenting with colour variations I achieved a good match, which blended in perfectly with the corporate branding. I supplied the client with several file variations so that the artwork could be used for both print and on-line.

The Impact

The client loved the memorable character and how he leveraged the power of their brand even further, increasing market presence.
